A bit of History
For 100s of years the Karankawa, Lipan, along with other Indian tribes occupied the region around Corpus Christi. Consequently, they enjoyed hunting and fishing the bays.
In 1519, the Spanish explorer Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda traveled into the Bay on the same day as the Roman Catholic Feast of Corpus Christi (Body of Christ). As a result, he gave Corpus Christi Bay Its name. Later on, the town would share the same namesake.
The region continued to be mostly unoccupied until 1839 when Colonel Henry Lawrence Kinney established a buying and selling trading post on what’s now, downtown Corpus Christi. This small settlement was initially known as Kinney’s Post. As the middle 1840s approached, the town became known as Corpus Christi.
