History of Alamo Texas
First of all, starting in 1902, Peter Ebenezer Blalock and George L. Hawkins acquired 32,000 acres of land surrounding in what is now Alamo Texas. So, the city currently sits 15 miles north from the Rio Grande River. Therefore, by 1908, both men had organized the town, built shipping pens and established a railroad depot named Ebenezer. Whenever a community of buyers housed in temporary dwellings began to plant roots, it grew to become referred to as Camp Ebenezer. Hence, the State Historic Marker indicating the site’s original location is available in front of Alamo Junior High School at 1819 U.S. Business 83.
In 1909, Blalock’s and Hawkins’ ranching plans ended, together they sold a parcel to the Alamo Land and Sugar Company. As a result, the organization moved the city from Camp Ebenezer to higher ground for flood protection and better drainage. C.H. Swallow and Renfro B. Creager subsequently created the Alamo Townsite Company. They promoted to prospective settlers and gave the town name of Forum, Changing the name to Swallow in 1909 following the creation of the first post office. This town is now called Alamo.
