Edinburg History
In 1908, John Closner and Dennis B. Chapin created a new community here. As a result, the city square was founded at the present crossroads of U.S. Highway 281 and Condition Highway 107. Furthermore, the city was named “Chapin” in recognition of one of the developers. A local myth explains that Edinburg grew to become the county seat of Hidalgo County inside a dramatic, nighttime covert operation where the county records were taken from the prior county seat. However, historical documents show better reasons. The initial Hidalgo County Courthouse within the town of Hidalgo was under constant danger of flooding due to the town’s closeness towards the Rio Grande, which sometimes encroached around the building
Furthermore, Texas law needed the courthouse location to be near the geographic core of the county. When Dennis Chapin participated in the shooting of Oscar J. Rountree (which led to his death) in the Dan Breen Saloon in Dallas, the city rededicated its name to “Edinburg” to recognition Mr. John Young, a leading businessman who had been born in Edinburgh, Scotland. Finally, the city was formally named in 1911 and incorporated in 1919.
