History of Weslaco Tx.

Firstly, founded on the part of a Spanish land grant referred to as Llano Grande, Weslaco Tx officially began in 1919 with a partnership made up of Ed and Dan Couch along with Robert L. Reeves. Consequently, Weslaco’s name originates from the initials from the W. E. Stewart Land Co., which held title towards the site from 1917 to 1919. Furthermore, they built the town of Weslaco Texas. Finally established in 1920, a post office what makes a town official. So, the town of Weslaco Texas was incorporated in 1921. Weslaco was founded nearly ten years after the other valley town’s in the region, Weslaco depends upon a multitude of companies because of its economic base. For that reason, descendants of a few of the early settlers still live here.

Erected in 1928, Citizen’s were proud of Weslaco City Hall. As a result, this structure replaced a frame community building here. City founder Ed Couch (1879-1944) and Mayor David E. Kirgan (1877-1936) held celebrations marking the building’s completion. Also, prominent Weslaco architect R. Newell Waters designed the Town Hall with Spanish colonial style detailing. Intricate cast stone sculpture adorns the entryway and cupola. Spanish tiles with colorful geometric patterns decorate the inside stairs. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, 1978. Marker location: Weslaco City Hall, 500 S. Kansas Ave., Weslaco.
