Mercedes Tx History
Mercedes is called “The Queen Town of the Valley” or “La Reina del Valle.” The town began September 15, 1907, through the American Rio Grande Land & Irrigation Company. It is among the earliest towns within the Rio Grande Valley; incorporation occurred March 8, 1909. Also, the city celebrated its centennial in 2007.
Situated in Capisallo Pasture, a part of Capisallo Ranch of Jim Welles. This location was referred to as Pear Orchard due to the vast species of exotic cactus growing there in those days.
There are those who said the original name provided to the town was “Diaz” in recognition of Porfirio Diaz, then president of Mexico. Later it had been supposedly renamed “Mercedes Diaz” in commemoration of the president’s wife. Mercedes grew to become the Queen City. This story, however, is incorrect. Neither of Diaz’s two spouses was named Mercedes.
General Zachary Taylor’s headquarters ended up being to the southeast of Mercedes. It was close to the Rio Grande. There that old Rabb Ranch was renowned for its stagecoach stop and landing for the riverboats transporting supplies towards the settlements and military installations.
The old Toluca Ranch still stands at the International Bridge at Progreso, the sister city towards the south. This ranch was near the river and a prized target for bandidos throughout the times of Pancho Villa. Also, with many secret rooms and passages in its construction, it was coupled with heavy window shutters around the home windows to safeguard its residents.
